The Eco²-Schools as New European Bauhaus Labs special issue, titled “The Role of Schools in the New European Bauhaus,” frames educational institutions as active agents in advancing the New European Bauhaus (NEB) vision by merging sustainability, beauty, and social inclusion within daily life and the built environment, with a strong emphasis on learning-by-doing and community engagement.

It brings together contributions from educators, researchers, architects and practitioners, that demonstrate how schools and related environments can evolve into Open Schooling “living labs,” where creative sustainable teaching methods, such as blended and outdoor learning, experimental space renovation, and project-based climate action, connect students, teachers, families and wider communities in cooperative, transformative processes.

Together, the selected papers demonstrate how schools, across diverse educational levels and socio-cultural contexts, can act as catalysts for sustainability, inclusion, and innovation. By documenting concrete practices and outcomes, this special issue offers valuable insights for educators, researchers, and policymakers seeking to scale NEB-inspired approaches and strengthen the role of education in Europe’s green transition.
